Lunch for Thursday, March 31, 2011

It's the last day of March and in a few weeks it will be Easter.  So now it's time to do all sorts of Easter type bentos.  So for today I made bunnywich's.  Made with 100% whole wheat bread and turkey.  I cut a small bit of nori for the face and used a pick for the noses.  I didn't notice until I got to work and was looking at the picture that one of the bunnies mouth is kind of off.  Oh well, I am kind of off.  Also in the same container I have grapes and blueberries.  In the other box I have sweet mini peppers, grape tomatoes, baby carrots, a mandarin orange, red beans and a babybel cheese.  I am really enjoying these cheeses since a small cutter makes such great cutouts in the wax.

Lunch for Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Happy Wednesday everyone.  For today I made a girl with a balloon.  I got the idea for the dress of the girl from Fun Lunch Box.  The girl is made with beef bologna, cheddar cheese and a red sweet mini pepper.  Her balloon is a grape on a decorative pick.  In the other part I have red wine vinegar chicken, broccoli, grapes, the rest of the mini pepper, blueberries, tomato, red beans and a carrot/cucumber salad.  I made the salad using the ingredients I normally put into a spring roll.  There is shredded carrot and cucumber, peanuts, mint and green onion.  I did add a little red wine vinegar before I put the mixture in the refrigerator last night.  So it should have soaked up the yummy flavor by lunch time today.

Lunch for Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Last night we had spaghetti with Italian sausage for dinner so I cut off a piece of the sausage, halved it, scored it, cooked it and saved it for my lunch today.  As I was cooking I had my water boiling and I dumped all the spaghetti in the package into the pot.  The moment it hit the water I had an oh-no moment.  I thought, "Dummy, you use spaghetti pieces to secure some things in your bento.  Too late now and hopefully I will not require any until I get to the store again."  But as it turned out I needed a piece today for the ladybugs head.  I had to use a toothpick.  sigh

I had purchased some egg furikake at Asian Mart the other day and thought I would try it.  So I made two origiri mixed with the furikake.  This is the first time I have tried anything like this and I have to admit the smell wasn't too my liking when I mixed it up.  But I am a daring person and I will give it a taste test.  Sometimes things taste better after the flavors have mellowed and blended.  So we'll see.

Also in this box I have a Babybel made into a ladybug, red beans, sweet mini pepper (those are so tasty!), purple potatoes and carrots cut into butterfly shapes, grapes, grape tomatoes, broccoli and a couple pieces of blueberries.  One blueberry is pinned on for the ladybugs head, with a toothpick.

Lunch for Monday, March 28, 2011

I finally won something on the bento4japan ebay auctions going on.  Just a small accessories set but I was happy I was able to help.  I had actually put in a higher maximum bid than what it ended at but that just means I will be able to bid on something else now.  Gotta budget for bentos you know.  There are many more great  items available.  Make sure you take a look.

Today's lunch was made with many ideas and no plan at all.  I hate when I have all these ideas in my head for bentos and I want to try them all at once.  Sometimes it backfires on me.  We went to the grocery store this weekend and I picked up some Babybel cheese and some of those sweet peppers like seen on the Bento Zen blog.  And I finally got to use my new tamagoyaki pan!  Love it!  Thanks Heather!  She still has more available if you would like to buy your own on the OhayoBento site.

I cooked my tamagoyaki and then placed very thin sliced ham inside before rolling it up.  Also in this box I have a mixture of carrots, cucumber, mint and peanuts inside rice paper.  I added a purple potato/carrot flower to the middle of the rice paper then placed the mixture on top.  I then folded up the bottom and pinched it together to make a ball.  Other items are mandarin orange, cucumber slices, grape tomatoes, sweet mini pepper, broccoli, blueberries and grape mochi.

Breakfast for Friday, March 25, 2011

Today is another day that I will go out to lunch with a co-worker.  So that means a breakfast bento!  Yippee!  I am starting to like the variety.  I was kind of upset last week but my breakfast bento turned out so well I thought it would be good to do a breakfast one anytime I have a lunch out.

For today I have two chickens and somebody has laid some blue eggs.  The chickens are made from real chicken eggs and their comb and wattles are made from red egg white sheet, their beaks are carrot and the eyes are nori.  I placed then on top of their nest which is made of oatmeal and I put in a few blueberries for eggs.  I only have a 10-15 minute commute to work so the oatmeal was still warm when I got in.  I made the chicken's first then the oatmeal, threw it all together and headed out the door.  Well I did take a picture before I packed it up.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and continues bidding on the bento4japan auctions still going on.  They have raised over $2,000!!!  Woo Hoo!!!

Lunch for Thursday, March 24, 2011

There are just some days when I think my lunch looks blah.  And today's is one of those.  I try to make a sandwich at least once a week.  But today's just lacks color.  I also was trying to use one of my other bento boxes, which I know it's more of a bowl.  I don't use this one often because I never seem to get the food in there how I want.  If I could go back and start over on my first bento buying spree I would have just bought a plain box like my blue or yellow ones.  They get used alot.

Now don't get me wrong I love all my boxes and I think this one is beautiful.  But some are just not practical.  The first real bento box I bought has all sorts of dividers which I thought I needed.  I don't, heck you really don't need a special box.  And this bowl/box was my second real bento box purchase.  And well, it sits in the cabinet with the first one.  Oh well, lessons learned and I do have 9 boxes now.  I try to refrain from buying more.  But I do have a few styles that I think I would like to have before I buy just to collect.  I really would like an oval shaped wooden one, a stainless steel Lunchbots type and one with the thermal container and side boxes.

For today's lunch I have a lion sandwich.  The lions face was made with cheddar and provolone cheese.  I used 100% whole wheat bread and there is turkey inside.  In the other section I have red beans, baby carrots, rice cracker mix and sweet gherkin pickles.  And I just tossed in a mandarin orange.  I hope everyone has a bentoful day!

The bento4japan auctions are still on going.  I keep getting outbid.  I'm not too upset about it.  That just means that more money is being raised to help those in Japan.

Also Maki from Just Bento has a message on her site regarding this disaster.  I have been following her on Twitter and her commentary on there has me laughing and sometimes dropping my jaw.

Lunch for Wednesday, March 23, 2011

I have a dentist appointment today so I decided today's lunch needed a dentist type theme.  Some friends at work suggested some strange things like a mouth with blood.  Then we were laughing about it and I said I need to make more yellow rice and fill the top with something that made it look like a cavity.  Or maybe a tooth shaped bread bowl filled with something.  We were getting pretty silly and all was too gross to actually follow through on.  I mean really, would you want to eat a lunch that looked like you were eating a cavity?  Not me.

I did have a little trouble shaping the rice this morning.  One of my cats turned evil last night and bite down on my hand with all his strength and would not let go.  And he's a BIG cat so he is pretty strong.  It bleed and is so swollen that I woke up last night hurting and had to take a couple of ibuprofen.  I'm going to need more soon because it still hurts.

So for today's lunch I have two teeth made with rice, teriyaki chicken, green beans rolled in a slice of turkey, carrots, grape tomatoes and two pieces of mochi, one is grape flavored and the other is sesame.  So glad I found these at Asian Mart.

And don't forget the bento4japan auctions are still going on.  More great stuff to buy!

Lunch for Tuesday, March 22, 2011

For today's lunch I have minions.  And I don't mean devils/demons etc. I mean the cute little yellow minions from the movie Despicable Me.  My son and I were watching it the other night and I thought that they would make a great lunch theme.

I made my minions using white rice that I cooked with some saffron.  It always gives a nice natural yellow color.  I added some nori for the mouths and glasses bands and I had found some small sugar eyes at Michaels last week and I used those.  Their clothes are made from a blue fruit roll up.  In the rest of the box are frozen chicken nuggets that will thaw by lunch time, green beans that I sauteed with green onion, garlic and soy sauce, baby carrots, grape tomatoes, strawberries and a container with BBQ sauce in it.  These little minions make me smile.

Lunch for Monday, March 21, 2011

Spring is in the air. How do I know? Because my allergies are horrible today.

For today’s lunch I have a patch of tulips made using purple potatoes and a red egg sheet. The stems are green onion. I cut the tulips using a small cookie cutter. I also have another of my small mandarin oranges, a strawberry, some baby carrots I found at Whole Foods, a piece of salmon, some multicolored grape tomatoes and veggie gratin. I tried using the tulip cutter on the orange and I’m not sure it did too well. I don’t feel it looks like a flower. Oh well, it’s lunch.

Breakfast for Friday, March 18, 2011

For today I only have breakfast.  No lunch bento since I am to go out to lunch with a co-worker.  This is probably bad of me to say but I was kind of upset that I did not get to make a lunch bento.  That is why I made a breakfast one instead.  What is wrong with me?  I think I am bento obsessed/possessed.

In this bento I have scrambled eggs, waffle, strawberries, blueberries and a small mandarin orange.  One of my other co-workers came into work with these small oranges and I had to go out and buy some for my lunches.  Normally we don't get small fruits and veggie around here.  Most of the time they are as big as can be.  Just like the strawberries in the bento.  My mother bought the container of strawberries and they are HUGH!  I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Also make sure you check out the bento4japan auctions happening on ebay.  Some really great stuff and the money raised is going to help those affected in Japan.

Lunch for Thursday, March 17, 2011

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!  It was good to have a couple of days off work and spend time with family.  I managed to go see Rango, do some Asian Mart shopping and enjoy life.  I was very happy with my Asian Mart shopping trip.  I went looking for Sweet Rice Flour to make Mochi.  They had it but they also had packages of Mochi already made.  I opted for the already made.  I also picked up lots of other goodies there.  It was a good shopping trip.

For today's lunch I have a Saint Patrick vixen with her mug of beer and a rainbow.  I wasn't too pleased with how her eyes turned out but I was running out of time and couldn't redo them.  She is made from beef bologna.  Her eyes are provolone cheese, her cheeks and mouth are imitation crab, her hair is orange colored soy wrapper, her mug is cheddar and provolone cheese, her hat is cucumber.  The rainbow is made from strawberries (red), carrots (orange), mango (yellow), bell pepper (green), blueberries (blue) and purple potatoes (purple).  I also added in some chicken cooked in soy and ginger in the lower corner.  And the clovers are made of cucumber.

I also made some clover shaped cookies for my co-workers.  Ahh it's gonna be a good day.

On a more somber note: I have been following Maki from Just Bento on Twitter and she has been posting a lot of updates on Japan.  Also on her Just Hungry site you can find different ways you can help.  The conditions there just seem to get worse all the time.  It is so sad and tragic and hopefully everyone will do what they can to help.

Lunch for Monday, March 14, 2011

I hate Daylight Savings!  It's more of a hassle than anything.  Why can they not just get rid of it?  I don't think anyone would mind.  Really.

My iPhone failed me this morning when the alarm went off an hour early.  It was set to go off at 5:30 like normal and it went off at 4:30.  But I didn't know that.  I turned off the alarm without looking at the time and started to get ready for work.  As I was walking into the kitchen I saw the clock on the stove (which I set correctly the day before) and it was an hour earlier.  Ugh!!!  So I sat on the sofa for a while and fell asleep.  I was already super tired since we went on a road trip this weekend at the spur of the moment and I didn't get much sleep.  Luckily the kid, who is out of school this week for spring break, was up and informed me of the time.  Why is it when the kid has school it's hard to get him out of bed but when school is out he is up and ready to do something?

For today's lunch I have a turkey sandwich that I made into a clock showing 4:30.  Also I added some bell peppers, carrots and rice cracker mix.  I won't have lunch to show for a couple of days.  I am taking off work to spend some time with my kid and parents who are coming into town.  But I will be back on Thursday with a Saint Patrick's Day bento.

Lunch for Friday, March 11, 2011

It was very sad to wake up this morning and hear about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.  My heart goes out to those affected by this tragedy.  I do know that Bento & Co located in Kyoto has checked in via Facebook and they are ok.  Kind of makes it hard to be fun and light hearted about my lunch today.

For today's lunch I used what was left of the purple jasmine rice and made a hungry monster.  Also in this box is a vegetable gratin that I have not made in a long time.  I really like it and the recipe comes from Just Bento.  Not sure why I stopped making it.  And I have another piece of the chicken I made last week that I cooked in garlic and soy sauce.  Luckily I had a couple of pieces leftover that a stuck in the freezer.  I just defrosted it and heated it up this morning in a pan.  I hope everyone has a good weekend.

Lunch for Thursday, March 10, 2011

For today's lunch I had really wanted to make a cutout of the new Starbucks logo.  They are celebrating 40 years and without them I would not have spend so much money of coffee.  I tried cutting it out of cheese, no luck.  I tried cutting it out of nori, it broke.  So I gave up on that thought and so fo today I have my bear.

The bear is made using 100% whole wheat bread.  I cut the circles and then took some of the crust and rolled it up for the ears.  The facial details are made from provolone cheese, some that has been colored.  And of course I had to make it a girl and put bows on.  Just like my Build-A-Bears.  Yes I have Build-A-Bears.  Not a lot but some.  Inside is the rest of the provolone cheese and some deli turkey meat.

The rest of the box contains broccoli, lettuce, grapes, grape tomatoes and the rest of this weeks cucumber and carrot mixture.

Lunch for Wednesday, March 9, 2011

Yesterday I was looking at some clipart looking for inspiration for a teddy bear and I came across a panda that just made me laugh.  I thought he looked like he had partied too much.  So for today's lunch I made a drunk panda.  Even the kid said he looked like he was laying in the grass just about to pass out.  lol

I had to get up super early this morning to take the kid to detention...again.  ugh boys!  But I was still able to cook everything, shape the panda (using precooked rice that I heated up) and get it all packed together in less than 30 minutes.  Yippee!

The drunk panda was made using white rice and purple jasmine rice that I added a bit of food coloring to get it to look more black.  I also added a little bit of nori and provolone cheese for the eyes and mouth.  On top of his head I added a party hat pick and in his paw I added a partial bottle of soy sauce.  I think he has had too much sauce.  Surrounding the panda is steamed broccoli, a tamagoyaki, broiled salmon, and a mixture of carrots and cucumber.  I also added another small container of grapes not pictured.  This lunch defiantly made me smile even if it was real early in the morning.

Lunch for Tuesday, March 8, 2011

Nothing super cute today.  I guess I needed a day off.  Actually I was craving spring rolls made with rice paper.  So that is exactly what I made.  Inside my rice paper I have imitation crab, carrot, cucumber, green onion, and lettuce.  I also added some rice cracker snack and grapes.  I usually use chicken and add peanuts for these but for some reason I think the kid ate all of the peanuts.  So I'll try it like this and see if I like it.

GUESS WHAT?!!!

I was doing my daily bento blog cruising and on Just Bento my Girls Day bento was there.  WOW!
Here's the link.  I'm super excited because when I was learning about bento's I found Maki's site and go there often for ideas and recipes.  And yes I own her book The Just Bento Cookbook.  It is one of the things I bought for my birthday.  This has just made my day.

Lunch for Monday, March 7, 2011

For today's lunch I had no idea what I was going to make.  I didn't prepare anything the night before and I was coming up blank with ideas.  But when I woke up this morning I thought of a bunny dreaming of love.  I cut out my bunny using beef bologna.  The rest if made of provolone cheese that I soaked in various colors of food coloring.  Also in this box is some teriyaki chicken, broccoli, grape tomatoes, and strawberries.  And I made more cucumber and carrots like last week except I cut them different and remembered to add the dill.

Lunch for Friday, March 4, 2011

For today's lunch I did not prep anything last night and it took less than 30 minutes to prepare this morning.  I made a crab using a hot dog bun.  I knew we had some hot dog buns that needed to be used up.  So I sat and thought about the different things I could do with one and a crab came to mind.  Especially since all I had to do was cut off the ends and attach them to the top of the middle part.  I made crab salad to eat with it.  But I used imitation crab so no crabs were harmed in the making of this lunch.  For the crab salad I shredded some crab sticks, added some green onion, garlic powder and light Miracle Whip.  A quick and simple lunch.  Yum!

While looking at some pictures of crabs for inspiration I found the following picture and thought it was so cute I had to share.  I know it is from flickr but I do not know who posted it there since I was able to grab it from a search engine.  Enjoy!

Lunch for Thursday, March 3, 2011

Today is Hinamatsuri (Girl’s Festival) in Japan.  It is a day to celebrate women and girls health and happiness, which is very good thing.  So for today I made a girl wearing her festive kimono.  I created her using my refrigerated egg white mixture to make three egg sheets in pink, white and green.  I think the pink one failed and I added too much red coloring to it.  I also made a mock hishi mochi using the leftover egg sheet.  I guess that would change it to a hishi tamago?  OK I'm not sure on the translation.  And I cooked some chicken thighs in garlic and soy sauce.  I thought it tasted delicious but the kid said it tasted funny.  Oh well, more for me.

Lunch for Wednesday, March 2, 2011

Today is Dr Seuss's birthday and I am celebrating with a bento that reflects my two favorite Dr Seuss books, "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" & "Green Eggs and Ham".  The fish are made from provolone cheese, green egg sheet, imitation crab and more provolone that I let soak in blue food coloring.  I think it's a little too blue but there was no turning back.  My green eggs and ham is made from egg sheet and a bratwurst.  I made the egg sheet using my refrigerated egg white mixture and just added green food coloring.  I also added some more of the cabbage I made and my cucumber and carrot mixture.  Both were so yummy yesterday I was happy to add some more to my lunch today.

I also made a breakfast bento this morning.  I normally just drink my coffee for my breakfast but when I was putting the strawberries in my lunch I couldn't resist.  I also put in what was left of the mini banana nut muffins and some cheese cubes.  I'll have to take a lactaid pill but it will be worth it for the colby-jack cheese.

Lunch for Tuesday, March 1, 2011

For today's lunch I have my rainy day bento.  Although this morning it was sunny and 37 degrees.  No more rain for right now but reports of earthquakes in the next state over are not a good thing.  There seem to be so many earthquakes around here lately and that is not normal.  I am use to extreme weather changes such as a blizzard then one week later the highs in the 70's, tornados, etc. but do we really have to have earthquakes too?

Last night I went to the grocery store on a veggie mission.  There was a lack of vegetables in my frig so I bought cabbage, baby cucumbers, grape tomatoes, lettuce, and a bunch of other things.  When I got home I cooked the whole head of cabbage using the Stir Fry Cabbage Recipe on Just Bento.  It was very tasty even though everyone else in the house said it stank.  I can't wait to have it for my lunch.

Also in this box is a cucumber and carrot mixture I made with just vinegar and salt.  I meant to add some dill to it but seems I forgot.  I also have my purple jasmine rice with my rainy day girl and her umbrella.  The umbrella is made of imitation crab as is her bow.  The rest of her is made from provolone and cheddar cheese and bologna.  I also used some fruit roll up for her eyes and mouth.  I'm not a fan of the taste of nori except when it's from the sushi bar and holding together my favorite roll.  So I have been trying to find alternates and this was one thought.  And of course I used sesame seeds for my rain drops.  I hope there is no rain in the forecast.
